Canadian Gaming Summit 2024 Concludes with Record Attendance

The Canadian Gaming Summit, held from June 18-20 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, wrapped up with a record-breaking attendance of 3,000 participants. This year’s event featured notable speakers, including Alberta’s Minister of Service and Red Tape Reduction, Dale Nally, who announced plans to open the province’s gaming market, and Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Gaming, Stan Cho.

Tony Plaskow, Commercial Director of Black Cow Technology, highlighted the event’s growth, linking it to the development of the Canadian gambling industry. Plaskow remarked on the transformation from a primarily lottery-focused event to one embracing the broader commercial market in Ontario.

The summit included over 150 speakers, with many sessions reaching full capacity. Key presentations were delivered by Duncan Hannay, President and CEO of Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), alongside CEOs from crown corporations such as BCLC, Loto-Québec, and Atlantic Lottery.

Crown corporations were well-represented, not only in panel discussions but also with a dedicated lounge on the expo floor. Kevin deBruykere, Director of AML and Investigations at BCLC, underscored the value of the panel on competition, enforcement, and growth in Canadian gaming, highlighting the importance of collaborative discussions among crown corporations.

Regulators also reflected on Ontario’s regulated market experience, with insights from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), OLG, and iGaming Ontario. PointsBet Canada CEO Scott Vanderwel praised a panel featuring key regulatory leaders as particularly impactful.

The summit also featured a keynote interview with Brian Christopher, President and CEO of BC Slots, conducted by Canadian Gaming Association (CGA) President & CEO Paul Burns. Christopher emphasized the significance of social influencers in the gaming industry.

Josh Turk, Board Member and Chief Strategy Officer at Low6, noted the event’s international appeal, with attendees from North America, Europe, the UK, and Latin America. This global perspective enriched discussions on the gaming industry’s future.

Over 1,100 of the 3,000 attendees were representatives from local and global operators, including FanDuel, Sports Interaction, Flutter International, and PokerStars. Kris Abbott, Stake Country Manager for Canada, praised the organization and networking opportunities provided by the event.

The summit’s agenda also included a Player Protection Symposium, and diverse meetups such as the Global Gaming Women Breakfast, First Nations Breakfast, and African Americans in Gaming, complemented by evening networking events.

Britt Doll, Global Marketing Director at Rivalry, highlighted the informal and productive nature of the networking opportunities. Scott Vanderwel pointed out the significant opportunities still available in Canada’s gaming market, noting that while Ontario represents half of Canada’s population, there is still much potential in other provinces.

The Canadian Gaming Summit 2024 successfully brought together industry leaders, regulators, and stakeholders, fostering valuable discussions and networking opportunities, and underscoring the ongoing evolution and growth of the Canadian gaming industry.
